Introducing The fake Panerai Radiomir 1940 Tourbillon GMT Red Gold
We’ve been on the ground in Hong Kong for replica watches & Wonders – Asia’s premier exhibition of haute horlogerie. Panerai has a number of eye-catching releases, and right now we’d like to talk about the Radiomir 1940 Tourbillon GMT Oro Rosso. We’ve covered Radiomir 1940s before (specifically the Radiomir 1940 Chronograph Collection), and while those models had purists riled up over their Minerva wares, this next 1940 ought to gratify them.
Let’s start on the inside with the manufacture caliber Panerai P.2005 manual. First and foremost, this is a tourbillon – the infamous complication that declares war on gravity from the confines of your wrist. But, where the traditional tourbillon rotates on its axis, this cage rotates perpendicular to the balance, and does so in 30 seconds (half the expected time). The result is a more even run and fewer inaccuracies. Best of all, a sapphire crystal back showcases this perpendicular cage.
It also showcases the rest of the movement, covered by Panerai’s version of the three quarter plate – on a portion of which one can find a power reserve indicator with a whopping six days on it (three barrels in series in this). The finish is done quite well, with a subtle sandblasted look. The jewel holes are visibly stripped, there’s sharp, consistent beveling throughout, and all the printing is crisp, blued and well proportioned.
The P.2005 also houses a GMT 24-hour complication. The screw-down crown can function as a quick set mechanism for the home time, and is able to advance the hour hand in one-hour increments without hacking the minutes or seconds.
Now, let’s move on to the exterior. The dial is brown with a satiné soleil (satin sunburst) finish, and two-and-a-half subdials. One is a 24-hour a.m./p.m. function at 3 o’clock. The second at 9 o’clock shows the running seconds, and housed within this subdial is a rotating tourbillon indicator. The large fake Panerai numerals at noon and six, as well as the hour indices, are all carved out to reveal the sandwiched gold plate underneath, making the hands, subdials, and hour markings Super-LumiNova luminous against the brown dial.
The case is 48 mm of 5Npt red gold, with percentages of copper and platinum both for visual appeal and to enhance anti-oxidative properties – in case you plan to take it to its 5-bar depth rating. While production is limited to only 30 pieces, pricing has yet to be released.
